Scattering ashes at sea is a peaceful and meaningful way to farewell a loved one who cherished the ocean. Just Funerals offers a Funeral Director Accompanied Ashes at Sea service, guiding your loved one’s ashes through every step of the sea burial process even when family can’t attend in person.

Our sea burial package includes all professional fees, environmental health officer approval, a biodegradable sea burial urn, and full documentation, including your original NZ Death Certificate, Cremation Certificate, and a Certificate of Navigation Co-ordinates marking the exact location where the ashes were placed into the sea. Where possible, we’ll also record the ceremony on video to share with your family afterwards.

Cost $450

  • Professional Fees – organising ash scattering, including ensuring the scattering location is approved by environmental health officer.
  • Care of the Ashes Until day of scattering
  • Transferring ashes from families current urn to approved Sea Burial Urn
  • Few words said before ashes are placed into the sea
  • Obtaining Original NZ Death Certificate
  • Obtaining Original Cremation Certificate
  • Certificate of Navigation co-ordinates of where ashes were placed into the sea
  • Bio-degradable Urn as per requirements.

  • Atlantic Ocean: 17 October 2026 – 30 October 2026
  • South Pacific: 29 January 2027 – 5 February 2027

*Ashes would need to be with Just Funerals 14 days prior to start date.
*Ash Burial is also weather dependent of the sea.

A payment by Credit Card (2.5% surcharge) or Bank Transfer must be made prior to service. Viewing can be arranged immediately before the service or we have options for viewing before the funeral (or the day of the funeral), contact us to discuss. All children’s funerals are provided at cost price. Prices based on non-autopsy and an average sized person as are caskets.
